About

What is Mountaineering?

Mountaineering is, as the name suggests, the sport of climbing mountains. It encompasses climbing and hiking, and we do both! No matter what level you’re starting at, there’s something in the club for you. All you need is a love for the outdoors!

Why should you join the club?

For a small membership fee of €20, you get access to the climbing wall during our training sessions, where we teach you all the skills you need to become a competent indoor climber.

Fancy climbing outdoors? We have club days in Dalkey quarry where we can teach you the basics of trad climbing.

More of a hiker? We hike every Sunday around Dublin and Wicklow and run navigation workshops to help you become more independent on the mountain.

If you want to take your climbing or navigation to the next level, we run training courses with professional bodies which we significantly subsidise.

history

The mountaineering club was officially formed in 1967, although it has been operating informally since 1961. Since then we’ve barely changed, we’re still just a bunch of people who love spending time outdoors, climbing some rocks and going on our weekly Sunday pilgrimage.

If you’d like to learn a bit more about the club’s history, here is the 50th Anniversary club history document. It’s a really interesting read, would recommend!
